Erbe dell’ignoto

Non dimenticare l’estate del covid
era verde con il sole nel centro di New York.

Ricorda che il verde era traslucido,
foglia di olmo giallo-blu e aghi di abete rosso,

il verde delle strisce opache di Rothko
il verde di Giotto fatto con tuorli d’uovo sull’intonaco,

il verde sfocato delle ninfee a Giverny
il verde di Arshile Gorky nei giardini di Van,

verde traslucido dell’uva sul davanzale
il latte versato sulla tazza di maiolica verde,

i cipressi di Van Gogh nel vento di Arles
che soffia sulle onde verde salvia del Rodano —

nell’orchidea falcata
tra le fronde della Giungla di Rousseau

e il verde d’inchiostro e acqua sulla lavagna di Maria
che mi ha svegliato prima dell’alba —

il muro bianco della mia stanza che incornicia il mondo
prima di contemplare un campo di farfalle ansiose.

Mente di strisce ed emulsioni. Erbe dell’ignoto.
Resta. Nel ritorno. Tuorli d’uovo sull’intonaco.

Grasses of Unknowing

Don’t forget the summer of covid
was green with sun in central New York.

Remember the green was translucent,
yellow- blue leaf-elm and spruce-needled,

green of Rothko’s opaque swaths
green Giotto made with egg yolks on plaster

cataract green of water lilies at Giverny
Gorky green of the gone gardens of Van

translucent green of sill-life grapes
sun-lit milk pouring out of green majolica,

Van Gogh’s cypresses in the wind of Arles
blowing into the sage waves of the Rhone —

into the brush of the orchid
in the fronds of Rousseau’s jungle

and the green of Mary’s ink and wash on board
that woke me before sunrise —

the white wall of my room framing the world
before I gazed on a field of anxious butterflies.

Mind of swaths and emulsions. Grasses of unknowing.
Stay. In the return. Egg yolks on plaster.
